What does TimeRetain cost?
TimeRetain is currently free, because it's in beta.
Is TimeRetain really private?
Yes. By default, your data stays in your browser and never reaches a server. If sync is enabled, data is encrypted locally before syncing. Only your 24-word key can decrypt it.
Do I need to create an account?
No. If you enable sync, you receive a 24-word login key that only you control.
Is there anything to install?
No. TimeRetain runs entirely in your web browser on desktop and mobile.
Does TimeRetain work offline?
Yes. Optionally, if you click 'Install' in your browser, TimeRetain runs as a progressive web app (PWA) that works offline and syncs when you reconnect. For best results, use Chrome or Firefox. Safari supports PWAs but less reliably.
What happens to my data if I clear my browser cache?
Local data will be deleted. To prevent loss, back up your data and enable encrypted sync to restore it on any device using your login key.
Can I sync between my phone and desktop?
Yes. Enable sync and use your 24-word login key on another device. Data is encrypted before syncing and cannot be read by anyone.
Can I export my time tracking data?
Yes. Export all data anytime in CSV or JSON with one click.
Why do I need to back up my data?
Your device is the primary storage location for your data, even if Sync is enabled. Unlike most apps, TimeRetain cannot access your information because it is encrypted on your device using your 24-word login key.
Since your data cannot be recovered externally, it could be permanently lost if you clear your browser storage, forget your login key, or encounter a software bug. To protect against this, TimeRetain provides a simple backup tool and periodic reminders.
What technologies does TimeRetain use?
TimeRetain relies on several web technologies. Special credit goes to Evolu: an open-source, privacy-focused, local-first platform for storing and syncing data securely between devices.
Is TimeRetain open-source?
Not yet. Open-sourcing is not a main priority at the moment, although the appeal of such a step is very clear.
